CHAPTER 35

STRETCH, WHERE ARE YOU?

SHE RETURNED a minute or so later with a small boy. Anyone could see from his red eyes that he had been crying.

Major B.S. smiled. ‘Hello William, come to sign up for the Morris dancing, have you?’

Molly rolled her eyes. ‘He wants to know if anyone has seen his pet snake.’

Bax extended his hand.

‘Oh, you haven’t met my sergeant?’ said Major B.S.. ‘Bax, this is William, Bob Roberts’ youngest.’

‘Oh, I’ve just met your mum down at the general store. How long has your snake been missing, William?’

‘Three days now. I should have known something was up when he stopped eating. But I thought he’d be fine after I took him to the vet.’

Major B.S. laughed. ‘Has he taken that big suitcase on holidays with him?’

After he said it, William’s little face screwed up as if he was about to burst into tears again and Molly gave him hug. ‘Now, now. I’m sure he’ll be all right.’

Major B.S. sighed noisily. ‘Don’t mollycoddle the lad, Millicent. He’ll never learn to man up if you do that. Will you Pinky?’

Molly glared at him. So did William.

Bax said: ‘Cheer up matey. I bet Stretch has found somewhere nice and warm to kip, somewhere where there’s lots of food on hand.’

‘I hope so.’ The boy’s lip quivered. ‘Stretch is a Queensland green tree snake who’s not used to the cold temperatures down here.’

‘He doesn’t eat small white dogs, does he?’

Molly shot Major B.S. her blackest look yet when he said this. It was getting towards three weeks since the Westie had gone missing. Now everyone had to slow down to inspect every bit of roadkill in their way and Molly got her hopes up every time she heard a dog bark from afar.

‘Rats and mice are what he eats mainly,’ William said. ‘Please keep a look out for him. He’s probably the only two-metre green snake around at this time of the year.’
